The Finance Minister has announced the launch of a six-year "Self-Reliance in Pulses Mission" to promote the production of pulses such as Toor, Urad, and Masoor. This initiative aims to provide farmers with sustainable markets and fair prices. Under this mission, cooperative organizations such as NAFED and NCCF will purchase pulses from farmers over the next four years. Additionally, farmers will receive extra support for pulse cultivation, which is expected to increase their income and make the country self-reliant in pulse production.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted that the government is running the National Food Oilseeds Mission to boost self-reliance in edible oils. Similarly, efforts in the pulses sector have led the country to nearly achieve self-reliance. Farmers have contributed significantly by increasing the area under pulse cultivation by up to 50%. The government has also ensured the purchase of pulses at fair prices, thereby improving farmers' incomes and strengthening their economic position.
The Finance Minister stated that there is a growing awareness about nutrition, which is a positive indicator of a healthier society. She mentioned that as income levels rise, the consumption of vegetables, fruits, and millets (Shri Anna) is also increasing rapidly. To promote production, develop an effective supply chain, encourage processing, and ensure farmers get profitable prices, a comprehensive program will be initiated with the participation of state governments. Under this scheme, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and cooperatives will also be involved, leading to institutional strengthening in agriculture and increased farmer income.
