The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the first advance estimates for the major Kharif crops for the year 2024-25. The department has also initiated consultations with representatives from industry and other government departments to gather their opinions and insights for the current Kharif season.
As part of the Digital Agriculture Mission, the Digital Crop Survey (DCS) has been carried out with the cooperation of state governments. This initiative is a significant step toward obtaining accurate estimates of crop areas. In 2024, the DCS covered 100% of the districts in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Gujarat, enabling precise area estimation for these regions.
According to the first advance estimate, the total Kharif food grain production for 2024-25 is expected to be around 1647.05 lakh tonnes. This is 89.37 lakh tonnes more than last year's Kharif production and 124.59 lakh tonnes more than the average Kharif food grain production. The significant increase in production is attributed to the good yields of rice, sorghum (jowar), and maize.
For 2024-25, Kharif rice production is estimated to be 1199.34 lakh tonnes, which is 66.75 lakh tonnes more than last year and 114.83 lakh tonnes more than the average Kharif rice production. Maize production is expected to be 245.41 lakh tonnes, and the production of coarse grains (nutrient-rich/large grains) is estimated to be 378.18 lakh tonnes. The total Kharif pulse production is projected to be 69.54 lakh tonnes.
For 2024-25, the total Kharif oilseed production is estimated to be 257.45 lakh tonnes, which is 15.83 lakh tonnes higher than last year’s production. Groundnut production is expected to be 103.60 lakh tonnes, and soybean production is estimated at 133.60 lakh tonnes. Sugarcane production is projected to be 4399.30 lakh tonnes, while cotton production is estimated at 299.26 lakh bales (each bale weighing 170 kg).
Total Pulses: 69.54 lakh tonnes
Total Oilseeds: 257.45 lakh tonnes
