Historically, farming relied on plows drawn by oxen. However, modern farming has transitioned to using tractors, which come with advanced features that make farming easier, more cost-effective, and time-efficient. This allows farmers to manage other tasks efficiently.
Over 80% of farmers in India are small and marginal. Many of them still rely on oxen for farming, facing challenges in operating costs, maintenance, and securing good returns. To address these challenges, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed a compact, easily operable low-horsepower tractor tailored to meet the needs of small and marginal farmers.
This compact tractor is designed to be simple to operate and highly useful for small-scale farming. It is equipped with a 9 HP diesel engine, 8 forward and 2 reverse speeds, and a PTO with 6 splines at 540 RPM. The total weight of the tractor is approximately 450 kilograms. The front wheels measure 4.5-10 inches, and the rear wheels measure 6-16 inches. It has a wheelbase of 1200 mm, a ground clearance of 255 mm, and a turning radius of 1.75 meters.

Benefits for Farmers: Using a compact tractor increases the speed of farming operations and reduces the time required for various tasks. It also lowers capital and maintenance costs for farmers. Small and marginal farmers who previously relied on oxen-drawn plows can switch to compact tractors for more efficient farming.
Features and Prices of Mini Tractors: Mini tractors, also known as hand tractors, are useful agricultural tools for small farmers. In India, the price of mini tractors starts at around ₹2.9 lakhs and can go up to ₹6-7 lakhs, depending on the horsepower. Small tractors with 10 to 15 HP are priced between ₹1 to ₹2 lakhs. Affordable mini tractors can be purchased from companies like Sonalika, Mahindra, Swaraj, John Deere, and Eicher.
