India, a nation deeply rooted in its agricultural heritage, stands strong on the pillars of its rural population. According to the Central Budget for 2023-24, approximately 70% of families depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, making the fields the economic lifeline of India. Even more noteworthy is the silent yet powerful force behind the abundant crops of the country - the rural women of India.

An article released by NITI Aayog sheds light on the fact that 80% of women in these regions are intricately involved in the rhythm of agricultural life, fortifying their indispensable role in India's agricultural narrative.

Women farmers in India play various roles often overlooked. It is estimated by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization that they represent 33% of the agricultural labor force and account for 48% of self-employed farmers. As more men seek opportunities in urban areas, women have taken up responsibilities in the agricultural sector, contributing to activities ranging from farming to entrepreneurship and labor-centric work.

These remarkable women are responsible for producing 60-80% of the country's food and are involved in connected sectors like livestock management, horticulture, and post-harvest activities such as crop cutting. They perform crucial manual tasks like livestock management, fodder collection, and winnowing. Additionally, they work as community managers, facilitating the dissemination of vital information at the grassroots level. However, balancing fieldwork, household chores, and childcare poses a continuous challenge for them.

Education also plays a crucial role in this narrative. It is the gateway to enhancing the productivity and economic status of women in agriculture. Yet, numerous rural women remain deprived of quality education due to social, cultural, and economic barriers. Bridging this educational gap with offerings in agricultural training, financial skills, and entrepreneurial expertise becomes paramount for empowering women in these areas.
