The ITU-WTSA Robotics Challenge saw participation from students across 11 states, where they showcased innovative technological solutions for disaster management. The event aimed to demonstrate practical solutions in robotics to advance the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is hosting the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (ITU-WTSA 2024) in New Delhi. This national event is organized under the AI for Good Impact India initiative and serves as a qualifying tournament for the Grand Finale at the AI for Good Global Summit 2025 in Geneva. Young innovators displayed their skills in robotics and coding at this event.
A total of 120 teams applied for the competition, out of which 51 teams were selected to present their robotics solutions. The theme of the competition was 'Disaster Management,' and the winners in both junior and senior categories will have the opportunity to compete internationally in Geneva in July 2025. The competition objectives include:
1. Promoting inclusivity in robotics and coding for all students.
2. Designing, building, and programming robots to complete missions aligned with sustainable development goals.
3. Encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and sustainable practices.
The first challenge for participants was to create a robotic system capable of saving the lives of earthquake victims. A simulation was conducted to mimic real earthquake conditions, where robots were tasked with safely transporting victims to shelters and hospitals.
Several distinguished guests delivered keynote speeches during the program, including Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary General of ITU; Mr. Seizo Onoe, Director of the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) of ITU; and Prof. S. K. Saha, Project Director of the I-Hub Foundation for Cobotics (IHFC), among others. The competition concluded with an awards ceremony, where the senior category winner, Team “AI Pioneers,” and the junior category winner, Team “Rescue Rangers,” were honored.
Today's activities underscored the commitment of the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly to advance technology for social good and public health. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, WTSA 2024 is paving the way for innovations that address critical global issues.
