Protection from heatstroke in extreme heat

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, temperatures are expected to remain above normal during April-May 2025. As a result, many parts of the country may experience heatwave (heat stroke) conditions. Considering the potential risks, an advisory has been issued to help the public take necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses.
Symptoms of Heatwave (Heat Stroke):
- Excessive sweating or complete absence of sweating
- Muscle cramps, pain in the legs, abdomen, or other body parts
- Red patches, swelling, and blisters on the skin
- Headache, fever, weakness, and nausea
- Hot and dry skin
- Rapid pulse, dizziness, and unconsciousness
What to Do in Case of Heat Stroke?
- Move the affected person to a shaded or cool place.
- Use cold, wet cloths to sponge the body or give a cold water bath.
- Provide cool drinks like buttermilk, lemon water, or mango panna.
- In case of blisters, apply sterilized dressing and seek medical advice.
- If the person experiences vomiting or unconsciousness, take them to the nearest medical facility immediately.
- For muscle cramps, gently massage the affected area.
Preventive Measures to Avoid Heat Stroke:
- Stay hydrated by drinking sufficient water, buttermilk, ORS solution, lemonade, lassi, and mango panna throughout the day.
- Avoid going out in direct sunlight, especially between 12 PM and 3 PM.
- Cover your head with a cloth, cap, or umbrella while stepping outside.
- Wear loose, light-colored cotton clothes.
- Avoid synthetic and dark-colored clothing.
- If feeling overheated, wipe the body with a wet cloth or take a bath.
- Do not bathe immediately after coming indoors from the sun or hot winds.
- Reduce the intake of heavy, oily, and protein-rich foods. Limit the consumption of tea, coffee, and alcoholic beverages.
