The current climate change scenario has led to rapid fluctuations in weather conditions. Periods of cloudy skies, fog, and occasional light rain have increased humidity levels while reducing temperatures. These conditions have significantly intensified the infestation of aphids on mustard crops. These small green, black, or yellow insects feed on the sap of mustard flowers and pods, causing substantial damage to the crops.
During the current season, mustard has been sown on approximately 88.50 lakh hectares across India. States like Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh are major producers of mustard. However, from late December to March, aphids pose a serious threat to these crops. By sucking the sap from leaves, flowers, and pods, these pests weaken the plants, turning them yellow and dry. With a high reproductive rate, aphids can multiply into thousands within a week, exacerbating the problem.
Agriculture expert Dr. R.P. Singh suggests using sticky traps as an effective and eco-friendly method to tackle aphid infestations. Sticky traps are adhesive sheets that attract and trap insects, preventing them from damaging the crops. This method is not only cost-effective but also environmentally sustainable.
Other Methods to Control Aphids:
Timely Action for Mustard Crop Protection: Effectively controlling aphids not only preserves crop quality but also minimizes the need for chemical pesticides, thus protecting the environment. By adopting these measures, farmers can increase mustard yields and achieve better economic outcomes.
