Non-Basmati rice exports resume

The Central Government’s decision to lift the ban on the export of non-basmati rice has brought significant relief to the country's rice producers, with Madhya Pradesh farmers standing to gain the most. From 2015 to 2024, Madhya Pradesh exported rice worth a total of ₹12,706 crore, with the highest export value of ₹3,634 crore recorded in 2024.

Increased Benefits for Farmers through Non-Basmati Rice Exports:

As per the September 28 notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Government of India has set a minimum export price of $490 per tonne for non-basmati white rice. Furthermore, the export duty on parboiled and brown rice has been reduced from 20% to 10%, which will provide additional profitability for farmers in international markets.

Farmers to Gain International Recognition:

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav praised the historic decision, calling it a milestone in strengthening agricultural exports under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted that the decision would help not only farmers across the country but also those in Madhya Pradesh to establish their presence in the global market.

Key Rice-Producing Regions of Madhya Pradesh:

Madhya Pradesh’s key rice-producing regions Jabalpur, Mandla, Balaghat, and Seoni—are expected to benefit greatly from this decision. These regions are famous for their high-quality organic and aromatic rice. The fragrant rice from the tribal areas of Mandla and Dindori, along with Balaghat’s Chinnor rice, has earned the coveted GI tag, resulting in increased demand in international markets.

Madhya Pradesh Contribution to the Global Market:

The primary export destinations for rice from Madhya Pradesh include China, the USA, the UAE, and several European countries. This decision will not only boost the income of the state's rice producers but also enhance the global recognition of products from tribal areas.

Growth in the Rice Industry: Recent years, Madhya Pradesh’s rice industry has witnessed substantial growth, with over 200 new rice mills established. This decision by the Central Government will allow farmers and exporters to sell their rice at better prices in international markets, significantly increasing their incomes.

From 2015 to 2024, rice exports amounted to ₹12,706 crore.
