The 12th edition of the Poultry and Livestock Expo 2024 will be held from August 22-24, 2024, at BIEC in Bangalore, India. Concurrently, the 13th edition of DairyTech India 2024 and the 15th edition of AgriTech India 2024 will also take place. This exhibition will bring together India's leading poultry and livestock players, especially poultry and dairy equipment manufacturers, breeders, food product exporters, industry experts, and farmer delegations under one roof. It is essential to have a strong platform for all stakeholders to share knowledge and technology.
With a population of 1.37 billion, India is highly focused on development, aiming for good food, better health, and improved living standards for all. Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the demand for eggs and chicken. The Indian poultry market, which includes broilers and eggs, is projected to reach INR 4,340 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 16.2% from 2019 to 2024.
India ranks first globally in livestock population, serving as a major source of family income and employment. In the poultry sector, the government's focus, besides framing suitable policies for enhancing commercial poultry production, is on strengthening the family poultry system, addressing livelihood issues.
The poultry sector has shown significant growth within the food and agriculture industry. Trends such as contract farming, broiler production, and the sale of fresh frozen meat are on the rise. Commercial poultry farms contribute approximately 75% of egg production, with the remainder coming from household/backyard poultry. In the coming years, poultry production and consumption in India are expected to grow due to various factors such as shifting food habits, urbanization, and increasing awareness of balanced nutrition.
Several poultry associations in India are playing an important role by regularly guiding farmers, creating consumer awareness, presenting industry requirements to the government, and promoting egg consumption on various occasions. Notable associations include the Poultry Federation of India (PFI), National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC), Indian National Federation of Animal Health (INFAH), Broiler Coordination Committee (BCC), and many others.
Challenges in the Poultry Industry: India leads with a 10% growth rate in the poultry sector, followed by Brazil at 7%, the USA at 2.1%, and China at 2%. Despite being one of the most organized agricultural sectors in India, the industry faces challenges such as lack of advanced technology, inadequate cold storage facilities, and processing equipment, especially at the farm level. These constraints hinder significant jumps in production and productivity.
