The scientific name of lychee is 'Litchi chinensis'. It is a tropical fruit known for its sweet and juicy taste. Have you ever wondered what steps the government is taking to improve the economic condition of farmers? The Bihar government is providing a subsidy to specifically promote lychee farming. Let's delve into how this scheme works and how it benefits farmers.
Farmers with a minimum of 0.25 acres (0.1 hectares) and a maximum of 10 acres (4 hectares) of land for litchi cultivation will be eligible for grants. This scheme encourages farmers to utilize their land efficiently and maximize litchi production.
The five districts of Bihar, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, Samastipur, and Vaishali, are the primary regions for lychee cultivation. The soil and climate of these areas are considered ideal for lychee farming.
Availability of quality plants: Under the annual action plan for the fruit expansion program, the availability of quality planting materials is a key aspect. This will be ensured through departmental nurseries, agricultural university subordinate nurseries, NHB-accredited nurseries, the Centre of Excellence in Desari, Vaishali, the National Lychee Research Centre in Mushari, Muzaffarpur, and selected agencies through competitive bidding. This ensures that farmers receive healthy plants, leading to increased production.
Under this scheme, a subsidy amount is provided for lychee farming per hectare. In the first year, ₹30,000 is given; in the second year, ₹10,000; and in the third year, ₹10,000. This financial assistance helps farmers invest in lychee farming and boost their productivity.
Only land-owning farmers (Raiyat) can benefit from this scheme. Beneficiaries are selected at 78.56% for the general category, 20% for scheduled castes, and 1.44% for scheduled tribes. This ensures that farmers from all categories can benefit from this scheme.
Women's Participation: In this scheme, 30% participation of women in each category is ensured. This initiative aims to empower women and increase their participation in the agricultural sector. It will improve the economic condition of women in rural areas and provide them with opportunities to become self-reliant.
