The Bihar government has launched a Coconut Sapling Distribution Scheme, under which farmers and urban residents can avail coconut saplings at subsidized rates. The primary objective of this initiative is to promote coconut cultivation in regions like Bihar. The unit cost of a coconut sapling is Rs. 85, which includes production expenses of Rs. 70 and district transportation costs of Rs. 15. Beneficiaries will receive a subsidy of 75%, amounting to Rs. 63.75 per sapling. Therefore, farmers and urban residents will only need to pay Rs. 21.25 per sapling.
Selection Criteria for Beneficiaries: Preference will be given to farmers interested in planting saplings near their homes, gardens, or fields. Urban residents can also benefit from this scheme by providing lease agreements or land receipts.
Distribution Process of Saplings: Coconut saplings will be distributed according to the targeted number of saplings per district. The Bihar Coconut Development Board, through the Deputy Director of Horticulture in Patna, will oversee the distribution process, ensuring compliance with regulations. Each beneficiary can receive between a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 712 saplings (178 saplings per hectare) at subsidized rates.
Availability of Saplings: The availability of saplings will be ensured by the Bihar Coconut Development Board, Patna, through respective district Deputy Directors of Horticulture. Farmers must follow the prescribed process to obtain the saplings.
