Thursday, September 19, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan announced that rice production for the Kharif season is projected to exceed last year's levels. Despite heavy rainfall damaging some crops, Chauhan expressed optimism that overall yield would increase. He attributed the boost in production to favorable monsoon conditions, which have led to improved paddy sowing. Although certain regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana were affected by excessive rains, he reassured that the overall rice output would remain unaffected. Chauhan was confident that this year’s rice production would surpass that of the previous year.
During a press conference, the minister highlighted that Kharif paddy, harvested around November, constitutes nearly 70% of India’s total rice output. According to the government's third estimate for the 2023-24 crop year (July-June), Kharif rice production stood at 114.36 million tonnes. He also noted that the rice cultivation area had increased by 1.64 million hectares over the past week, reaching 41 million hectares.
Minister Chauhan also spoke about the increase in oilseed cultivation, despite some damage to crops like soybeans. He pointed out that the sowing area for pulses, coarse grains, and oilseeds had expanded compared to last year, and improved crop varieties are expected to boost productivity.
Chauhan emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing agricultural output and increasing farmers' incomes through the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism. The government has set a procurement target of 48.5 million tonnes of Kharif rice this year. Additionally, special attention is being paid to the procurement of millet.
The minister also reiterated the government’s focus on the development of the agricultural sector. He highlighted the achievements of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in the first 100 days of Prime Minister Modi’s third term. Chauhan stated that the Prime Minister had introduced 109 new seed varieties across 65 different crops for the benefit of farmers. Furthermore, state governments have been asked to ensure timely availability of high-quality seeds for the Rabi season. Agricultural and educational institutions have also been roped in to assist with seed distribution, and the government will guarantee MSP-backed procurement of farmers' produce.
When asked about efforts to double farmers' incomes, Chauhan explained that progress is being made, with surveys underway. Initial data indicates that many farmers have already seen their incomes more than double. The minister also announced that a modern "Krishi Chaupal" initiative would begin in October, where he will engage directly with farmers and agricultural organizations every Tuesday. Additionally, a call center will be established to address farmers' issues.
