Budget 2025: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the 2025-26 Budget, unveiling several initiatives for farmers. The government announced the Prime Minister’s Grain and Agriculture Scheme, self-reliance in pulses, the establishment of a Makhana Board in Bihar, and the setting up of a Urea Plant in Assam.
This budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made significant announcements for the agriculture sector. These included self-reliance in pulses, the formation of a Makhana Board in Bihar, and the establishment of a Urea Plant in Assam. Additionally, the limit of the Kisan Credit Card has been increased from ₹3 lakh to ₹5 lakh.
The government aims to initiate transformative reforms in six key sectors over the next five years. These will include introducing grain programs in low-yield districts and promoting fish production. The government also plans to increase farmers' incomes, raise the startup funding limit to ₹20 crore, and initiate reforms for sustainable agricultural growth.
Five-Year Package for Cotton Farmers and Makhana Board Establishment:
A five-year package will be launched for cotton farmers to improve productivity, along with the announcement of a Cotton Production Mission. A urea plant will also be established for the benefit of farmers. As part of this initiative, a 12.7 lakh metric ton capacity urea plant will be set up in Assam. The government will also create a Makhana Board for Bihar, and farmers will have access to loans up to ₹5 lakh for dairy and fisheries.
Major Missions for Clean Tech and Pulses Production: The government will focus on boosting the traditional cotton industry and promoting Clean Tech in manufacturing missions. Moreover, a six-year mission for improving the production of pulses such as Tuvar, Urad, and Lentils will be introduced. Special attention will also be given to vegetables, fruits, and nutrition. Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasized that the Kisan Credit Card will provide short-term loans to 7.7 crore farmers, fishermen, and dairy farmers.
1.7 Crore Farmers to Benefit: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also announced that under the Prime Minister’s Grain and Agriculture Scheme, 100 districts with low agricultural productivity will be selected. This initiative aims to enhance irrigation, diversify crops, increase yield, and strengthen storage capacity. This scheme will benefit 1.7 crore farmers across the country.
