In a major effort to bridge the digital divide in rural India, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has announced the launch of the Digital India Common Service Center (DICSC) project. This initiative will begin in the districts of Pilibhit and Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, with plans to establish DICSC centers in nearly every gram panchayat across 10 districts, totaling 4,740 centers nationwide.
Under this project, 720 centers will be set up in Pilibhit and 1,273 in Gorakhpur. Additional centers will include Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Maharashtra) with 870 centers, Chamba (Himachal Pradesh) with 309, Khammam (Telangana) with 589, Gandhinagar (Gujarat) with 288, Mamit (Mizoram) with 100, Jodhpur (Rajasthan) with 415, Leh (Ladakh) with 95, and Puducherry with 81 centers. CSC e-Governance Services India Limited will oversee the technical management and implementation of these centers.
With an initial budget of ₹31.6088 crore, this project is set to operate for six months, with the possibility of a three-month extension. Through these DICSC centers, essential services such as Aadhaar registration, banking, financial planning, tele-law, telemedicine, education, and e-commerce will be accessible to rural citizens.
Each center will feature high-speed broadband connectivity and modern infrastructure, transforming them into multifunctional service hubs. This connectivity will empower Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), support local economic growth, and create employment opportunities. GPS-enabled mobile vans will promote government schemes and deliver essential resources, spreading awareness even in remote areas.
Transforming the Rural Economy: The DICSC project aims to deliver critical digital services to these areas, empowering local entrepreneurs and promoting inclusive economic growth. The initiative is expected to strengthen the economic landscape of Pilibhit and Gorakhpur, connecting these regions to the broader digital economy.
