The leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute for the 2025-26 marketing season. For the 2025-26 seasons, the MSP for raw jute (TD-3 grade) has been set at ₹5,650 per quintal, ensuring a 66.8% profit over India's average production cost. This MSP is in line with the policy announced in Budget 2018-19, where the government committed to fixing MSP at a minimum of 1.5 times the average production cost in India.
For the 2025-26 season, the MSP for raw jute has been raised by ₹315 per quintal compared to the previous marketing season (2024-25). From ₹2,400 per quintal in 2014-15, the MSP for 2025-26 has increased by ₹3,250 per quintal, representing a 2.35 times rise.
Between 2014-15 and 2024-25, jute farmers received an MSP payment of ₹1,300 crore, compared to ₹441 crore between 2004-05 and 2013-14. Approximately 40 lakh farmer families rely on the jute industry for their livelihood. The jute mills and trade sector provide direct employment to around 4 lakh workers. In the previous year, 1.7 lakh farmers sold jute. West Bengal contributes 82% of the jute production, while Assam and Bihar each account for 9% of the production.
JCI Assigned Responsibility for MSP Operations, Compensation for Losses: The Jute Corporation of India (JCI) has been appointed as the nodal agency by the central government to continue MSP operations. In case of any losses from these operations, the central government will fully compensate for them.
