On Monday, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, stated in the Legislative Council that the central government is prepared to purchase onions from those farmers who have been left without buyers. Fadnavis mentioned that he has discussed the issue of onion farmers with the Central Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Piyush Goyal, during their meeting in Mumbai on Saturday. He stated that usually, permission for onion export is granted when there is a substantial production of the crop. However, this time, onion production has decreased by 25-30 percent. In such a scenario, restricting exports can help address the shortage. To enhance domestic availability and control prices, the central government has imposed a ban on onion exports until March 31, 2024.
