To promote milk production and animal husbandry in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has launched the ‘Mukhyamantri Kamdhenu Yojana’ (MKY). Under this scheme, farmers in the state will be encouraged to engage in animal husbandry. They will receive subsidized loans for purchasing milch cows and buffaloes, which is expected to strengthen their financial situation and increase their income through dairy products.
The scheme was approved during a state cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi. The government will invest ₹1,423.47 crore over the next five years as part of this initiative, aiming to benefit more than 1.5 million dairy farmers across the state.

Gopalan Scheme to Benefit Farmers

Additionally, the government is promoting animal husbandry through the Gopalan Scheme, with an allocation of ₹476 crore. Over five years, this scheme is expected to benefit more than 31,500 farmers. The government has also allocated ₹110 crore for buffalo entrepreneurship development, targeting over 6,000 farmers.

₹187 Crore for Cattle Insurance

To ensure livestock safety, the government has earmarked ₹187 crore for cattle insurance, covering 85% of the insurance cost, with the remaining 15% to be paid by the farmers. Additionally, the state government is budgeting ₹200 crore to promote fodder production. Moreover, ₹216 crore has been allocated for calf rearing programs, and ₹166 crore will be provided as incentives for dairy farmers.

Support for OMFED and Wheat for Ration Card Holders

The government also plans to strengthen the Odisha Milk Federation (OMFED) with a ₹25 crore budgetary support to enhance milk production in the state. In addition, the state government has announced good news for ration card holders. Soon, wheat will be distributed along with rice under the public distribution system. This decision follows the central government's revision of food grain allocations, affecting Odisha and eight other states, ensuring that people will once again receive wheat after a long gap.
