The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for 23rd October, predicting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds in various regions. Areas likely to be affected include Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, and Karnataka.
A deep depression over the east-central Bay of Bengal has intensified into Cyclonic Storm "Dana." The storm is moving northwest at a speed of 18 kmph and is currently located about 560 km southeast of Paradip in Odisha and 630 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal. The IMD expects Cyclone Dana to intensify further, potentially developing into a severe cyclonic storm by 24th October. It is forecasted to make landfall between Puri (Odisha) and Sagar Island (West Bengal) on the night of 24th or the morning of 25th October, with wind speeds of 100-110 kmph, gusting up to 120 kmph.
The IMD has also predicted heavy rainfall for Odisha and West Bengal from 24th to 27th October, with stormy weather today as well. Winds over the central and northern Bay of Bengal could range from 35 kmph to 90 kmph. Coastal areas in Odisha and West Bengal are on high alert due to the possibility of strong winds reaching up to 100 kmph.
Fishermen are strongly advised to stay off the sea, especially in the central and northern Bay of Bengal, due to hazardous weather conditions and rough seas.
