A recent study conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR) and Osmania University has revealed alarming findings. According to the research, farmers in Telangana, who spray pesticides on their crops, are increasingly falling prey to cancer and other severe health conditions. The study found 10 deadly pesticides in the blood and urine samples of these farmers, with dangerously high levels of Dialkyl Phosphate (DAP) metabolites.
Additionally, the farmers exhibited low levels of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme, which is a significant indicator of neurological damage.
The research was conducted between 2021 and 2023 in five villages each from Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy districts of Telangana. A total of 500 farmers’ blood and urine samples were analyzed, uncovering these alarming facts.
According to the report, farmers exposed to pesticides suffer from breathing difficulties, asthma, chest pain, rapid heartbeat, nausea, blurred vision, skin and eye irritation, mood swings, numbness, weakness, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. The study also found that farmers use 28 different types of pesticides, out of which 11 have been classified as highly hazardous by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Lack of Safety Measures Increasing the Risk:
Researchers highlighted that farmers do not follow necessary safety precautions while handling pesticides. This results in direct exposure through inhalation and skin absorption, leading to severe health risks. Many farmers mix pesticides with their bare hands, store them improperly, and dispose of them unsafely, further exacerbating the dangers.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) – A Sustainable Solution:
The report suggests adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and other sustainable agricultural practices to minimize pesticide use and its associated health risks. Experts emphasize the importance of organic farming and safer alternatives to chemical pesticides to protect farmers' health and ensure a sustainable and hazard-free agricultural future.
