Earn Big with Marigolds, Guide to Maximizing Profits in Marigold Farming
Marigold Farming

Marigold, a highly esteemed and popular flower, blooms year-round. Its seeds are shiny and jet black in color. Approximately 300 or more seeds are found in a gram of marigold seeds. To prepare marigold plants during the summer season, around 200-250 grams of seeds per acre are required, while during the winter season, 150-200 grams of seeds per acre are needed. By planting marigolds and selling them during festivals like Dussehra and Diwali, substantial profits can be earned. Farmers can earn good profits by cultivating marigolds at low costs. Marigolds are grown in all three seasons across the country.

When to Cultivate Marigolds:

According to experts, marigold cultivation is timed according to the season. Flowers are planted in January during the summer season. They are highly utilized during Navratri days and fetch good prices in the market. Marigold cultivation is done in April-May and before the onset of winter, between August and September.

Primary Varieties of Marigolds:

Some primary varieties of marigolds include African Marigold Climax, Jubilee Indian Chief, Crown of Gold, Spanish Gold, Yellosupreme, Cracker Jack, French Marigold Yellow Crown, Lemon Jam, Lemon Ring, Red Head, Butter Scotch, Goldie, Fire Cross. Advanced varieties include Poosa Narangi, Poosa Basanti, Maya, and Atlantic.

Soil and Optimal Temperature for Marigold Cultivation:

Marigold cultivation can be done in various types of soil. Soil with good drainage, such as sandy loam, is suitable for zinnias. Marigolds grow well in soil with a pH level between 7.0 to 7.6. Adequate sunlight is necessary for marigold crops. For better germination of seeds, the temperature should ideally range between 18 to 30 degrees Celsius. Prior to sowing, seeds should be treated with a fungicide such as Thiram, Captan, or Bavistin. Seeds should be sown at a depth of approximately 15-25 mm above the ground level.

Preparation of Marigold Plants: Marigold plants can be prepared in nurseries and then transplanted into fields. The width of the beds is maintained at 100-120 cm. During bed preparation, well-decomposed cow dung manure or compost should be mixed at the rate of approximately 5-8 kg per square meter. Seeds should be sown in lines, leaving a gap of 6-10 cm between two lines. The seeds should not be sown too deeply, with a depth of 1-2 cm, and should be covered with soil, sand, or compost. Regular watering is essential, as required. Marigold plants are ready for transplantation in fields within 20-25 days.
