Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, has announced the establishment of three AI Centres of Excellence (CoEs) focused on healthcare, agriculture, and sustainable cities, which will serve as global solution providers. The government has approved ₹990 crore for the development of these centres, further strengthening India's commitment to innovation, growth, and societal impact through AI.

During the inauguration ceremony in New Delhi, Shri Pradhan stated that these AI-CoEs will provide global solutions for public good while also generating new employment and wealth creation opportunities. He linked this initiative to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India), describing it as a significant step towards making India a global AI hub.

₹990 Crore Approved for Health, Agriculture, and Sustainable Development

Shri Pradhan also mentioned that the government has sanctioned ₹990 crore for the development of these centres over a five-year period from FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28. This initiative is part of the broader vision outlined in the 2023-24 Budget under the "Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India" framework, aimed at developing cutting-edge AI solutions to address challenges in healthcare, agriculture, and urban sustainability.

Addressing Challenges with India's AI Talent

Shri Pradhan emphasized that these AI Centres of Excellence will not only be limited to institutional success but will benefit the entire nation and establish new paradigms for global public good. He also highlighted that, with India's immense talent and enthusiasm, these centres will play a crucial role in shaping global public policy and providing AI-driven solutions to world challenges.

Promoting New Ventures and Employment Opportunities

Secretary Shri K. Sanjay Murthy stressed the need for interdisciplinary research and collaboration among various stakeholders to maximize the benefits from these AI-CoEs. This initiative will not only strengthen India's AI capabilities but also foster new ventures, innovations, and employment opportunities, establishing India as a global AI powerhouse in the future.
