MSP for Rabi crops increased, with expectations of a good rise in wheat, lentils, and chickpeas

The Indian government is preparing to announce the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2025-26, with significant increases anticipated for major crops such as wheat, lentils, chickpeas, and mustard. Farmers are feeling optimistic due to last year's increases in Minimum Support Prices (MSP) and the government's dedication to improving food security.

During the 2024-25 season, wheat an essential crop for millions of Indian farmers experienced a 7% rise in MSP, increasing from ₹2,125 to ₹2,275 per quintal. Should a similar increase occur this year, the MSP for wheat could reach ₹2,434 per quintal, encouraging domestic consumption and improved storage capabilities.

Recent average market prices for wheat in various states reveal the following: ₹2,850 per quintal in Delhi, ₹2,580 in Uttar Pradesh, and ₹2,650 in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Additionally, Gujarat and Maharashtra reported prices of ₹2,725 and ₹2,690 per quintal, respectively.

Lentils are also expected to see further price increases, having previously risen by 7% to an MSP of ₹6,425 per quintal. Experts predict a 2-3% increase this year, potentially bringing the MSP to ₹6,553 per quintal, highlighting lentils' crucial role in India's protein supply.

Chickpeas, which saw only a 2% increase last year with an MSP of ₹5,440 per quintal, are likely to receive stronger incentives in the upcoming season. Likewise, mustard vital for edible oil production witnessed a 4% rise last season, and farmers hope for similar or higher MSP increases to reduce dependence on imported oils.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) is expected to announce the final Minimum Support Price (MSP) shortly, a decision that will directly impact farming choices for the upcoming Rabi season. This anticipated increase is designed to offer much-needed relief to farmers grappling with escalating costs.
