In Muzaffarpur, Bihar, farmers will have good earnings as they are encouraged to cultivate foreign-origin fruit, "Laungan," which is a variety of lychee. Muzaffarpur, Bihar, is renowned for lychee production. Now, farmers are being motivated to grow the foreign variety of lychee known as "Laungan."
"Laungan" is essentially a variety of lychee, and its successful cultivation has been researched by the National Lychee Research Center. This fruit is famous in Thailand and Vietnam. It is said to be ready after the regular lychee season, making it a suitable option for farmers during that time. Unlike lychee, it does not have a red color. It is believed to contain anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, which enhance the body's immune system.
Dr. Vikas Das, a scientist at the National Lychee Research Center in Muzaffarpur, stated that "Laungan" is a well-known fruit in Thailand and Vietnam. Currently, research on this fruit is being conducted at the National Lychee Research Center in Muzaffarpur. The saplings of this fruit were imported from 24 Parganas, West Bengal. Farmers are being encouraged to plant "Laungan" saplings, and some of the fruits will be available for consumption from this week.
Dr. Das explained that the trees blossom in April, and the fruit is ready for consumption at the end of July. It will be harvested by the first week of August. "Laungan" is similar to lychee in taste and appearance. It can be described as a sweet fruit, just like lychee, with leaves and trees resembling lychee, except it does not have the red and rough appearance of lychee. The most significant feature of "Laungan" is that it is not prone to pests like lychee. The availability of "Laungan" extends for about a month after the lychee season ends.
