The recent unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms have left the farmers in distress. Sudden rainfall has led to the destruction of crops, and many farmers do not have storage facilities for the remaining produce. Safely storing fruits, vegetables, and grains post-harvest is a significant responsibility, especially when there is no provision for proper storage. In many cases, the absence of proper storage facilities can lead to the spoilage of the remaining crops. In these days, it wouldn't be wrong to say that crops are constantly under threat due to unpredictable weather conditions. In light of this, the Bihar government will now assist farmers in setting up cold storage units. The state government has decided to provide a 75% subsidy to farmers for constructing cold storage units under the Integrated Horticulture Mission. This subsidy will apply to Cold Unit Type-2.
For setting up a cold storage unit, the maximum cost has been capped at INR 10,000. Individual farmers and entrepreneurs will receive a 50% subsidy on this cost. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) will receive a 75% subsidy, which amounts to a maximum of INR 7,500. For the remaining costs of cold storage construction, cooperative banks can also provide loans.
Benefits of Cold Storage: In a country where the prices of grains and vegetables fluctuate daily, cold storage facilities can be a boon for farmers. Recently, there have been instances of farmers being forced to throw away tomatoes, onions, and other crops due to price crashes. In such cases, proper cold storage can make a significant difference.
Rather than discarding crops, farmers can store their produce for an extended period if they have access to cold storage facilities. When the right time comes, farmers can sell their produce at more favorable rates, resulting in better profits.
How to Apply: This benefit is applicable only to farmers in Bihar. To avail of this opportunity, you can visit the official portal of the Bihar Horticulture Department at horticulture.bihar.gov.in and submit your application.
