PMAY-G scheme: First installment released in Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Odisha

In a recent press conference, Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, announced a significant development under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G). This initiative aims to provide housing to rural families by 2024.

Rollout of PMAY-G in Jharkhand, Gujarat, and Other States:

On September 15, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will transfer the first installment of PMAY-G to eligible beneficiaries in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Subsequent events will be held on September 16 in Gujarat and September 17 in Odisha and other states where the election code of conduct is not applicable. This program is part of the government's broader mission to provide food, clothing, and shelter to the poor.

Benefits for Jharkhand and Gujarat:

Jharkhand, 20,000 beneficiaries will be given sanction letters, with more than ₹5 crore directly transferred to their bank accounts. Additionally, housewarming ceremonies will be conducted for 46,000 newly completed homes. Jharkhand has been set a target of 1,13,195 houses for the current fiscal year, with ₹187.79 crore already allocated.
Gujarat, which has constructed over 6.5 lakh houses in the last decade, will see ₹93 crore transferred to 31,000 beneficiaries. Gujarat’s target for 2024 is 54,135 houses, with ₹99.1 crore already disbursed.

National-Level Program in Odisha:

On September 17, 2024, Prime Minister Modi will conduct a national-level program in Odisha, distributing approval letters to 10 lakh beneficiaries across various states. Additionally, ₹3,180 crore will be digitally transferred to beneficiaries’ accounts, and 26 lakh families will move into their new homes. The "Awas + 2024" app will also be launched to help ensure all eligible families receive housing benefits.

Rural Connectivity Enhanced via PMGSY: Shri Chouhan announced the launch of the fourth phase of PMGSY, which will construct 62,500 kilometers of all-weather roads. These roads will link 25,000 rural settlements. Over ₹70,000 crore has been allocated for this phase, including provisions for building bridges wherever necessary.

PMAY-G Progress and Future Goals: Launched in 2016, PMAY-G has successfully constructed 2.66 crore houses out of its target of 2.95 crore. The program has now been extended for another five years, with plans to build 2 crore additional homes at an estimated cost of ₹3.06 lakh crore. The initiative symbolizes hope and empowerment for rural communities and highlights Prime Minister Modi's dedication to rural development in India.
