The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has launched 170 new seed categories on its platform to facilitate easy access to high-quality agricultural and horticultural seeds. With the upcoming sowing season in mind, approximately 8,000 seed varieties are now available, enabling central and state public sector units and other government bodies to purchase and distribute them to farmers across the country.
These new seed categories were developed in consultation with key stakeholders, including state seed corporations and research institutions. This collaborative approach ensures that the categories align with the latest regulations set by the Government of India, providing a standardized and accessible framework for seed procurement. The initiative aims to simplify the process for government agencies tasked with procuring and distributing seeds to farmers.
This development aligns with GeM's broader strategy to promote category-based procurement on its platform. This approach seeks to reduce the time usually required in the tendering process while enhancing transparency and accountability in government purchases. Additionally, it allows vendors across the country to reach government buyers more effectively.
GeM’s Deputy CEO, Mrs. Roli Khare, invited vendors to make full use of the new categories by listing their seed products and participating in government tenders. She encouraged seed corporations and state agencies to leverage these options for cost-effective, quality seed procurement, which could lead to potential savings and easier access.
Towards an Inclusive and Streamlined Seed Procurement System: This initiative marks a significant step towards making seed procurement simpler, more transparent, and accessible to all. Through this platform, farmers can more easily obtain quality seeds, preparing them for a successful and productive crop season.
