The Rajasthan government has announced a significant relief for farmers by extending the deadline for diggi (water storage tank) construction from March 31 to June 30, 2025. This extension will allow farmers to undertake construction even after the harvest season and avail the benefits of the government subsidy.

Construction Delayed Due to Standing Crops:

During March and April, standing crops in the fields prevented many farmers from carrying out excavation and machinery work in time. As a result, several farmers missed the opportunity to build diggis. Considering this challenge, the state government decided to extend the deadline.

Administrative Delays Affected Previous Plans:

The last financial year, a target was set to construct 981 diggis under the state scheme and 1,800 under the Atal Bhujal Yojana in Hanumangarh district. However, delays in administrative approvals and the harvest of rabi crops adversely impacted the progress of construction work.

Efforts by Public Representatives and Farmer Organizations:

Farmer groups and public representatives brought the issue to the attention of the government. Understanding the concerns, the state government extended the diggi construction deadline by three months.

Subsidy for Diggi Construction:

  • The state government is also providing financial assistance for diggi construction:
  • Up to ₹3 lakh for farmers in the general category
  • Up to ₹3.4 lakh for small and marginal farmers

Eligibility Criteria for Subsidy:

  • Farmers must reside in canal-irrigated areas of the state.
  • Their irrigation turn (bari) must be officially approved.
  • They must own at least 0.5 hectares of irrigated land.
  • The constructed diggi must have a minimum capacity of 4 lakh liters.
  • Applications that do not meet these conditions will be rejected at the department level.

Mandatory Safety Provisions:

View of past drowning incidents in diggis, the government has made safety standards mandatory.
A minimum 2-foot-high safety wall must be constructed around every diggi.
A warning board near the diggi is also compulsory to prevent accidents.

Farmers Responsible for Maintenance: After receiving the subsidy, the complete responsibility of diggi maintenance will lie with the farmer. This includes regular cleaning, monitoring water quality, and ensuring compliance with safety norms. This extension offers a valuable opportunity for farmers to complete their diggi construction without compromising their crop cycles, while also ensuring water security and sustainable irrigation infrastructure for the future.
