Today, Union Textile Minister Shri Giriraj Singh participated in an event commemorating 'World Cotton Day' 2024. The event was organized by the Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) and the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI). This year's theme was "Megatrends Shaping the Cotton Textile Value Chain."

Increasing Cotton Yields through Advanced Agricultural Techniques:

Minister Giriraj Singh reiterated the government's commitment to achieving a target of $350 billion by 2030, which includes an export goal of $100 billion. He emphasized that this target can only be met if all stakeholders in the cotton value chain work together. He also shared that adopting advanced agricultural techniques, such as high-density planting, closer spacing, and drip fertigation, can increase cotton yields from 450 kilograms per hectare to 1,500 kilograms per hectare. To achieve this, the widespread adoption of best agricultural practices is essential. The outcomes of this initiative are expected to inspire farmers in other sectors as well.

Appeal for New Seed Technologies to Reduce Labor Costs:

The Minister expressed concern about the challenges of weed management in cotton farming, which increases labor costs for farmers. He noted that this issue could be addressed by adopting new seed technologies, such as HT BT, and urged serious action in this direction.

Efforts to Enhance Employment and Productivity in Cotton Farming:

Textile Secretary Mrs. Rachna Shah highlighted that the cotton economy directly employs 6 million farmers and indirectly supports 45 million people. She mentioned that cotton accounts for 60% of the total fibers produced in the country, compared to just 23% globally. She called for a coordinated effort from all stakeholders to enhance cotton productivity. Additionally, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, Mrs. Prajakta Verma, informed attendees about the establishment of the Textile Advisory Group (TAG) to promote sustainable farming. This group aims to address the challenges faced by the textile industry. She also shared details about a comprehensive plan to increase cotton production and yield.

World Cotton Day 2024: Focus on Sustainable Farming and New Technology Use:

Participants at the event toured exhibitions showcasing muslin cotton products, recycled textiles, handmade garments, and other products. The one-day conference for 'World Cotton Day' 2024 featured discussions on critical topics such as sustainable farming, increasing production, and the utilization of new technologies. On this occasion, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles, Mr. Rohit Kansal, stated that India aims to make its textile industry worth $350 billion by 2030. He appealed to stakeholders in the cotton textile value chain to maintain the sustainability and competitiveness of the cotton industry.
