Pulses production will increase in UP, work project prepared for pulses crops
Project Plan for Pulse Production

Uttar Pradesh has become the largest consumer of pulses in India. To boost pulse production, the state will establish pulse villages in various districts of Bundelkhand, including Banda, Mahoba, Jalaun, Chitrakoot, and Lalitpur. Over the past seven years, pulse production in the state has seen a remarkable increase of about 36% by 2024. Production rose from 2.394 million metric tons to approximately 3.2 million metric tons during this period. Both the central and state governments are making every possible effort to enhance pulse production.

Project Plan for Pulse Production:

The UP government has developed a comprehensive project plan to boost the production of pulses such as urad, moong, and arhar. Under the National Food Security Mission (NFSM) for pulses, 27,200 hectares will be cultivated, and 31,553 quintals of seeds will be distributed. To ensure a smooth supply of seeds, 14 seed hubs have been established, aiming to produce around 21,000 quintals of seeds. Farmers will receive advanced varieties of arhar, moong, and urad in the form of mini-kits.

Establishment of Pulse Villages in Bundelkhand:

Pulse villages will be established in the Bundelkhand districts of Mahoba, Jalaun, Banda, Chitrakoot, and Lalitpur. Uttar Pradesh is not only a major producer but also a significant consumer of pulses. The government aims to increase pulse crop production from 14 to 16 quintals per hectare. To achieve this, high-yielding varieties of traditional pulse crops will be provided. Additionally, new irrigation techniques, such as sprinkler irrigation, will be implemented. The primary focus is to increase the yield of pulse crops.

Self-Reliant India in Pulse Production:

India is the largest producer and consumer of pulses in the world. As a result, global pulse-producing countries closely monitor India's and Uttar Pradesh's production and storage levels. If the yield is low, the demand in the international market increases significantly, impacting prices. Consequently, India spends valuable foreign currency on pulse imports. Achieving self-sufficiency in pulse production in Uttar Pradesh will help save foreign currency and strengthen the economy.

Benefits of Pulse Production Initiatives: Improved technologies and quality seeds of pulses and fruits will lead to higher yields. Increased pulse production will contribute to the state's economy and reduce dependency on imports. Farmers will benefit from better productivity and profitability. Adoption of advanced irrigation techniques will ensure sustainable farming practices.
