The Government of India has undertaken comprehensive measures in collaboration with States, Railways, and fertilizer companies to ensure an adequate supply of DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) for farmers during the Rabi 2024-25 season.
This year, the supply of DAP has been impacted by global geopolitical factors. Reduced exports to India by major suppliers and the Red Sea crisis have disrupted the supply chain. Approximately 60% of India’s DAP requirement is met through imports, and domestic production also relies heavily on imported raw materials. The Red Sea crisis caused supply chain delays, forcing vessels carrying phosphoric acid and other materials to reroute via the Cape of Good Hope, leading to extended voyage times.

Despite these challenges, over 17 lakh metric tons of imported DAP were delivered to various ports and distributed to states in October and November 2024. Additionally, 6.5 lakh metric tons of domestically produced DAP were supplied to the states during this period.
A total of 23 lakh metric tons of DAP (imported and domestic) were supplied in October and November 2024. So far, during the Rabi season, 34.81 lakh metric tons (LMT) of DAP and 55.14 LMT of NPKS fertilizers have been made available to farmers across the country.
Increased Usage and Consumption of Fertilizers in States: Major states such as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh utilized 5 lakh metric tons more NPKS fertilizers compared to the previous Rabi season. Nationwide, the consumption of NPKS has increased by 10 lakh metric tons compared to last year, marking a significant achievement in fertilizer usage.
Government’s Coordinated Efforts to Address Local Availability: To resolve issues related to local availability and ensure timely supply, the Government has established robust coordination with states, railways, and fertilizer companies. These concerted efforts have not only ensured sufficient availability of DAP and NPKS but also guaranteed timely delivery to farmers, thereby boosting agricultural productivity.
