After wheat harvesting, the burning of crop residues in fields is a common sight. However, did you know that these wheat stubbles can become a new source of income for farmers? According to agricultural scientists, if managed properly, farmers can earn an additional ₹70,000 to ₹75,000 per acre from wheat stubble.

Why is Burning Wheat Stubble Harmful?

Many farmers burn stubble to quickly clear their fields for the next crop. However, this practice causes severe environmental damage and reduces soil fertility. The heat destroys beneficial bacteria in the soil, which directly impacts crop productivity.

How Can Farmers Earn from Wheat Stubble?

  1. Sell it as Fodder: After harvesting with a combine harvester, wheat stubble can be collected and processed into fodder. There is a high demand for fodder among livestock owners and dairy farms. Around 10 quintals of stubble can be produced per acre, which can fetch a good price in the market.
  2. Prepare Vermicompost: Wheat residue can be converted into vermicompost, an organic fertilizer. With the rising popularity of organic farming, vermicompost has good market value. Farmers can use it on their own fields as well, reducing input costs and increasing yield.
  3. Produce Biogas and Fuel Briquettes: Wheat stubble can also be used to produce biogas. Additionally, it can be compressed into fuel briquettes, which are used as an alternative fuel source in various industries.

Government Support for Farmers:

The government has strictly prohibited the burning of crop residues and is spreading awareness among farmers. In several states, subsidies are being offered on the purchase of straw reapers and baler machines to help farmers utilize the stubble effectively instead of burning it.

What Should Farmers Do?

  1. Avoid burning crop residues; use them as fodder or organic compost instead.
  2. Take advantage of government schemes and subsidies available through the agriculture department.
  3. Connect with local dairy farmers or organic fertilizer producers to explore ways to sell crop residues profitably.
