So the fertilizers might become expensive? Farmers' expenses will increase as fertilizer imports at concessional rates from Russia stop.
For farmers, there is worrisome news. Due to global fertilizer supply issues, Russia has stopped supplying India with fertilizers like diammonium phosphate (DAP) at concessional rates. This could lead to an increase in the cost of fertilizers, putting a burden on farmers and raising their expenses.
Last year, Russia became India's largest supplier of fertilizers. This supply was made at subsidized rates. However, now Russian companies have started playing a role in supplying fertilizers based on market prices. This could lead to an increase in fertilizer prices in India, which could raise farmers' costs. Meanwhile, China has also reduced its fertilizer exports due to rising global prices. Decisions by Russian companies to supply fertilizers at market prices could increase India's import costs. Therefore, as global prices rise, the burden of subsidies could also increase. Due to rising fertilizer prices in the global market, China has also decided to reduce fertilizer sales abroad.
According to a senior official in the fertilizer industry, fertilizers from Russian companies will no longer be available at concessional rates. In the financial year 2022-23, India imported 4.35 million tons of fertilizers from Russia. The official mentioned that this import quantity has increased by 246 percent.
