In New Delhi, Shri J.P. Nadda, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, inaugurated "Medicine Update BJMFCON 2024." As the chief guest, he launched the 'Suvarna Patra' and the BJMF Directory, which promote continuous medical education for health professionals in this second edition of the annual program.
In his address, Shri Nadda praised BJMF's social and educational initiatives that work for the benefit of society. He emphasized the government's efforts under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reform the health sector, focusing on providing affordable and quality healthcare services. He also highlighted the implementation of a comprehensive health policy that offers holistic, inclusive, preventive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative care.
Shri Nadda provided insights into the expansion of healthcare facilities, revealing that India has established 173,000 high-quality Ayushman Aarogya Mandirs, with a significant number available in Bihar and Jharkhand. He noted improvements in maternal and child health indicators, such as increased institutional deliveries and a marked reduction in mortality rates among infants and children under five.
The minister pointed out that the number of medical colleges has surged from 387 in 2014 to 766 today. A total of 157 district hospitals have been upgraded to medical colleges, with eight located in Bihar (Purnia, Saran, Samastipur, Jhanjharpur, Siwan, Buxar, and Jamui) and five in Jharkhand (Dumka, Hazaribagh, Palamu, Chaibasa, and Koderma). He mentioned the redevelopment of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), which is set to become Asia’s second-largest hospital. Additionally, there has been a 125% increase in MBBS seats and a 134% rise in postgraduate seats. The government is also focusing on addressing regional disparities by establishing new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Patna and Darbhanga, as well as in Deoghar, Jharkhand.
Shri Nadda also discussed the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme, under which treatments worth ₹86,797 crore have been approved, benefiting senior citizens aged 70 and above. He commended the dedication of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and encouraged participants to provide actionable recommendations for enhancing healthcare facilities across the nation.
