To advance sustainable development in the fisheries sector of the Northeast region, Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh launched India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Sikkim under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). This initiative aims to promote organic aquaculture and fisheries in the state.

Sikkim: A Pioneer in Organic Fisheries:

By establishing an organic aquaculture cluster, Sikkim is poised to tap into emerging markets for organic fish and fish products. With a focus on Amur carp and other carp species, the cluster will offer significant economic, environmental, and social benefits. Building on Sikkim’s successful organic agriculture framework, the state is now expanding into sustainable aquaculture, setting the stage to become a leader in eco-friendly fisheries.

Organic Aquaculture to Increase Market Demand:

The organic fisheries cluster will eliminate the use of harmful chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides in fish farming. This approach will reduce environmental pollution, protect aquatic ecosystems, and support sustainable fish production. Organic fish products command higher value in domestic and international markets, creating new opportunities for farmers to earn better prices.

NABARD’s Financial and Technical Support: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will play a key role in the development of Sikkim’s organic fisheries cluster. NABARD will provide financial assistance and support the formation of fishermen’s cooperatives and fisheries-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs). This initiative will also encourage private investment, strengthen aquaculture infrastructure and technology, and empower local fishers and fish farmers in the state.

Enhancing Farmers’ Income: Under PMMSY, this initiative is designed to enhance farmers’ income and make the fisheries sector more competitive. The scheme, implemented across states and union territories, focuses on promoting sustainability and responsibility in fisheries while boosting the sector’s overall growth.
