Indore, the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh, continues to lead in various sectors, particularly in clean energy. Following the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, Indore has surpassed other cities in Madhya Pradesh in solar energy production, securing the top position in the country for cleanliness. The city currently generates solar energy at approximately 12,000 locations, with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts.
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana has rapidly increased the interest of electricity consumers in solar energy. Since February, more than 9,000 new electricity consumers have connected to this initiative. Solar panels have been installed on their rooftops and premises, with the generated electricity being officially recorded in the metering and billing systems. As a result, many consumers have experienced significant reductions in their electricity bills, with some even receiving credits.
In the Indore metropolitan area, solar energy is produced at around 12,000 locations, surpassing a total capacity of 100 megawatts. Ujjain district ranks second with solar production at 2,200 locations, while Dewas district comes third with 1,020 rooftop solar meters. Ratlam district is in fourth place with 755 locations, followed closely by Khargone district at 750 locations.
Increased Subsidies on Solar Panels to Reduce Electricity Bills
The PM Surya Ghar Yojana aims to minimize electricity bills for one crore households in India through solar systems. Initially, subsidies for installing solar panels of up to three kilowatts were around ₹43,000. However, this has now been increased to ₹78,000. Since early 2024, the central government has been offering a maximum subsidy of ₹78,000 for three-kilowatt solar panels.
Consumers can install rooftop solar systems for domestic use, but subsidies are only available for these installations. Currently, the central government provides ₹30,000 per kilowatt, ₹60,000 for two kilowatts, and ₹78,000 for three kilowatts in subsidies.

The demand for rooftop solar systems in India is rapidly increasing. The typical cost for installing a one-kilowatt system ranges from ₹45,000 to ₹70,000, depending on the quality of the solar panels, inverter, structure, and other components. Consumers are required to pay the installation cost upfront, while the subsidy amount is later transferred to their bank accounts.
