North India is reeling under an intense heatwave, creating conditions reminiscent of 'Nautapa,' the nine hottest days of the year. Meanwhile, southern regions are bracing for heavy rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a severe heatwave and scorching temperatures will persist on May 23 across Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh weather, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. In contrast, Kerala has been issued a red alert for heavy rainfall, while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are under an orange alert for significant downpours.
The onset of 'Nautapa' from May 25 to June 2 is expected to exacerbate the already oppressive heat, with temperatures likely to surge further during this period.
Today, Delhi is experiencing clear skies with a heatwave alert in place. The maximum temperature is forecasted to reach 44 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 31 degrees Celsius.
The capital is enduring severe heat this week, with temperatures potentially soaring above 46 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued a red alert for a heatwave in Delhi-NCR until May 29, warning of extremely hot winds during this period. Neighbouring cities such as Noida, Ghaziabad, and Meerut are also expected to face similar conditions. On May 23, temperatures in these areas are likely to exceed 45 degrees Celsius.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated, as the region faces some of the highest temperatures of the year. The ongoing heatwave underscores the importance of heat safety measures and staying informed about weather updates.
