The cultivation of summer moong (green gram) is rapidly increasing in Madhya Pradesh, leading to improved farmer incomes. Minister of Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture Development, Shri Edal Singh Kanshana, has urged farmers to minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides in moong crops to ensure better crop quality and human health safety.
This year, approximately 14.39 lakh hectares of land in the state are dedicated to summer moong farming, with an estimated production of 20.29 lakh metric tons. The average yield is recorded at 1,410 kg per hectare. The primary regions cultivating this crop are Narmadapuram, Jabalpur, and Bhopal divisions.
Agricultural experts have observed that excessive use of pesticides and herbicides is becoming common in moong farming. Particularly, the use of Paraquat Dichloride, a herbicide applied to accelerate crop maturity, is rising. However, residues of these chemicals remain in the crop, making it harmful to human health and reducing the quality of the produce.
Minister Kanshana has encouraged farmers to switch to organic and natural farming methods. By implementing crop rotation, mixed farming, and organic fertilizers, farmers can maintain soil fertility while ensuring better and healthier crop yields.
Key Recommendations for Farmers:
By adopting eco-friendly farming practices, farmers can ensure healthier produce, improved soil quality, and higher market demand. Sustainable cultivation methods will not only enhance profitability but also contribute to better public health and environmental balance.
