The Madhya Pradesh government is actively working towards cow conservation and promotion. Its objective is to ensure proper care, nutrition, and sustenance for cattle while simultaneously increasing the income of livestock owners. To achieve this, the government has introduced several new initiatives. The daily feed subsidy for cattle housed in registered gaushalas has been increased from ₹20 to ₹40. Additionally, a bonus scheme for milk producers is also being planned.
The Chief Minister emphasized that cattle rearing will support the establishment of CNG biogas plants, contributing to the energy sector.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav conducted a review meeting of the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department at the Secretariat. During the meeting, he directed that all gaushalas in the state should be inspected to prevent misuse of the subsidy funds. He emphasized involving society in the management of gaushalas and ensuring all necessary facilities for cattle in these shelters.
Drive to Reclaim Grazing Lands : The Chief Minister instructed authorities to launch a campaign at the panchayat level to reclaim grazing lands. Additionally, he proposed drafting a plan to encourage cattle rearing at households. He highlighted the nutritional value of cow milk, which can play a significant role in combating malnutrition among children. The government aims to ensure the availability of cow milk for malnourished children while focusing on the production and marketing of milk.
The state government plans to construct modern gaushalas in major municipalities such as Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur. Currently, Madhya Pradesh has a total cattle population of 1.87 crore, out of which 90.96% (1.70 crore) are indigenous breeds. The state operates 2,190 gaushalas, housing 3.15 lakh cattle. Of these, 627 are run by private organizations, while 1,563 operate under the Chief Minister’s Cow Service Scheme.
During the meeting, Animal Husbandry Minister Shri Lakhan Patel suggested tagging domestic and stray cattle with distinct colors for easy identification. He also proposed setting up CNG plants, a suggestion accepted by the Chief Minister. Chief Secretary Shri Anurag Jain recommended promoting the use of sex-sorted semen for breed improvement and increased production of heifers.
