As the peak summer season drives up electricity consumption, households across various states are grappling with soaring electricity bills. In response, several state governments have implemented relief measures, with some going as far as completely waiving electricity bills. Here's an overview of the latest developments in electricity bill relief and other significant announcements:
Chief Minister Champai Soren of Jharkhand has announced an increase in the free electricity quota for farmers. Previously set at 125 units, farmers will now receive up to 200 units of free electricity. This step is aimed at supporting farmers in their irrigation needs. Additionally, the Jharkhand government has unveiled a debt waiver scheme of up to ₹2 lakh for farmers.
To tackle unemployment, Chief Minister Soren has committed to providing 40,000 government jobs to youth within the next three months. Directives have been issued to expedite the recruitment process. Furthermore, the government plans to extend financial assistance to women aged between 25 and 50 years.
In Haryana, Chief Minister Nayab Saini has abolished the monthly minimum charge on electricity bills. Under the new scheme, households consuming between 10 and 100 units per month will pay a flat rate of ₹200. Chief Minister Saini launched this initiative during the inauguration of the Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme in Ambala. The scheme ensures that consumers only pay for the electricity they use, significantly reducing monthly bills.
In Delhi, the government continues its provision of free electricity. Minister Atishi announced an extension of the free electricity scheme until March 2025. Under this initiative, consumers will receive up to 200 units of electricity per month at no cost, ensuring uninterrupted power supply without the burden of high bills.
