Modi Government Implements Major Decisions to Benefit Basmati Rice, Onion, and Refined Oil Farmers
Modi Govt Implements Major Decisions for farmers

The Modi government has announced a series of significant decisions aimed at benefiting farmers of Basmati rice, onions, and refined oil. These measures reflect the government's continued commitment to enhancing the welfare of the agricultural sector.

Increase in Import Duty on Edible Oils to Support Oilseed Farmers

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, revealed that the Modi government has decided to raise the import duty on edible oils from 0% to 20%. With the inclusion of other elements, the total effective duty will reach 27.5%. This decision is intended to protect the interests of oilseed farmers, particularly those growing soybean and groundnut, whose crops are soon to be harvested. The increase in import duty is expected to lead to better prices for domestic farmers' produce, boost oilseed cultivation during the Rabi season, and enhance the market value of mustard crops. Additionally, the production of soya khali is anticipated to rise, benefiting related industries and boosting exports.

Removal of Export Duty on Basmati Rice to Ensure Fair Prices for Farmers

The government has also eliminated the minimum export duty on Basmati rice. According to Shri Chouhan, this move will enable Basmati rice producers to receive better prices for their produce. The removal of the export duty is anticipated to boost demand for Basmati rice, resulting in increased exports and enhanced income for farmers.

Increase in Basic Duty on Refined Oil to Drive Demand for Domestic Oil Crops

In another major move, the Modi government has increased the basic duty on refined oil to 32.5%. This step is aimed at boosting the demand for crops used in oil production, such as mustard, sunflower, and groundnut. The increase in duty is expected to improve the prices received by farmers for these crops and lead to the expansion of refineries in smaller and rural areas, creating additional employment opportunities.

Reduction in Onion Export Duty to Benefit Farmers and Exporters

Furthermore, the government has reduced the export duty on onions from 40% to 20%. Shri Chouhan noted that this reduction will help onion producers secure better prices for their produce and boost onion exports. This decision is expected to benefit not only farmers but also other sectors related to onion production and trade.

Modi Government’s Unwavering Commitment to Farmers’ Welfare : These policy changes underscore the Modi government's dedication to the welfare and economic improvement of farmers, ensuring that the agricultural sector remains a central focus of its development agenda.
