The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has crossed a significant milestone, with total enrolments surpassing the 7 crore mark. More than 56 lakh new registrations have been recorded in the current financial year, 2024-25. As the scheme enters its 10th year, it continues to provide pension coverage to the most vulnerable sections of society, an achievement made possible through the relentless efforts of banks and the State and Union Territory Level Bankers' Committees (SLBCs/UTLBCs).
The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has undertaken several initiatives in recent years to raise awareness about the APY. These efforts include conducting outreach programmes at state and district levels, organizing awareness and training sessions, and publicizing the scheme through various media channels. Additionally, simplified one-page flyers/handouts have been released in Hindi, English, and 21 regional languages. Regular performance reviews are also conducted to track progress.
The APY is designed to provide comprehensive security, or "Sampurna Suraksha Kavach," by offering a lifelong defined and guaranteed pension to the subscriber. In the event of the subscriber's death, the same pension amount is extended to the spouse. After the death of both the subscriber and spouse, the entire corpus accumulated until the subscriber reaches the age of 60 is returned to the nominee.
Launched on May 9, 2015, the Atal Pension Yojana is a flagship social security scheme of the Government of India. Its primary aim is to establish a universal social security system for all Indians, especially the poor, the underprivileged, and workers in the unorganized sector.
