The Government of India has officially launched the 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme, aimed at providing drones to 14,500 women self-help groups (SHGs) for agricultural purposes. With a significant budget allocation of ₹1,261 crores, this initiative is part of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), designed to empower rural women by equipping them with modern technological tools that enhance their agricultural capabilities.
The scheme will be implemented from 2024-2025 to 2025-2026, focusing on providing rental services for spraying liquid fertilizers and pesticides to farmers. Given the increasing need for modern agricultural practices, the introduction of drones represents a crucial step towards sustainable farming and improved crop yields.
Key Features of the Scheme:
- Central Oversight: The implementation of this scheme will be managed by a robust committee comprising secretaries from the ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development, Fertilizers, Civil Aviation, and Women and Child Development. This multi-ministerial approach aims to ensure effective monitoring and execution of the scheme.
- Financial Support: Women SHGs will receive 80% of the cost of drones and related equipment as central financial assistance, with a maximum subsidy of ₹8 lakhs per SHG. Additionally, Cluster Level Federations (CLFs) can obtain loans under the National Agricultural Infrastructure Financing Facility (AIF), benefiting from a 3% interest subsidy.
- Comprehensive Drone Package: Each participating SHG will receive a complete drone package, which includes a basic drone, spraying assembly, battery set, camera, carrying box, and additional components such as spare batteries and propellers. The package also includes 15 days of training for drone pilots and operators.
- State-Level Implementation: Leading fertilizer companies (LFCs) will act as state-level implementing agencies, coordinating with local departments, drone manufacturers, and SHGs to ensure a transparent procurement process.
- Monitoring and Accountability: An IT-based drone portal will function as the management information system for the scheme, aiding in the monitoring of drone operations, financial disbursement, and service delivery.
The 'Namo Drone Didi' scheme aims not only to bring modern technology into the agricultural landscape but also to provide sustainable livelihood opportunities for women, enhancing their income and prospects. By empowering women SHGs through drones, the government is taking significant steps towards promoting gender equality and advancing agricultural practices in rural India.
