The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, is developing the National Legal Metrology Portal (eMaap) by integrating the Legal Metrology departments and their portals from all states. The objective of this initiative is to simplify the processes related to licensing, verification, enforcement, and compliance management. By creating a centralized database, it will increase transparency in trade and simplify procedures for businesses.
State governments currently use their respective portals for registering packaged goods, issuing licenses, and verifying/ stamping weighing and measuring instruments. However, enforcement activities and settlement of offenses are not yet available online. Therefore, the Department of Consumer Affairs is working to integrate all state portals into the National Legal Metrology Portal (eMaap), which will include all legal metrology activities, enforcement actions, and integrated data.
Several consultation meetings have been held regarding the development of the eMaap portal. A hybrid meeting was held with legal metrology controllers and their representatives to discuss the initial framework of the portal. Another hybrid meeting was attended by representatives from the industry (such as FICCI, CII, PHD, ASSOCHAM), state legal metrology departments, and the NIC team.
Conclusion: This portal will create a convenient and transparent environment not only for businesses but also for consumers and the government. eMaap will promote increased production by simplifying business processes and ensure the protection of consumer rights.
