The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the implementation of the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) as an independent Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare. The total budget for this scheme has been set at ₹2,481 crore, with the Government of India contributing ₹1,584 crore and states contributing ₹897 crore. This financial framework will remain in effect until the 15th Finance Commission (2025-26).

What is Natural Farming?

The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) aims to promote natural farming across the country. It is an eco-friendly and sustainable farming method that is chemical-free, livestock-based, and rooted in traditional knowledge. It follows diverse cropping systems and local agro-ecological principles, ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.

Objectives of the National Mission on Natural Farming:

  1. To promote natural farming for the availability of safe and nutritious food for all.
  2. To reduce input costs for farmers and minimize their dependence on expensive external inputs.
  3. To enhance soil health while maintaining agricultural productivity.
  4. To promote biodiversity and strengthen agriculture’s resilience to climate change.

Boosting Organic Farming under NMNF:

Over the next two years, the scheme will cover 15,000 Gram Panchayats, reaching one crore farmers and promoting natural farming on 7.5 lakh hectares of agricultural land. Priority will be given to farmers already practicing natural farming, as well as those linked to State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs), Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs). 10,000 Bio-Input Resource Centres (BRCs) will be established to ensure the availability of organic inputs for natural farming. 2,000 Natural Farming Model Demonstration Farms will be set up at Agricultural Universities, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and farmers’ fields, where experienced Farmer Master Trainers will train others in natural farming techniques. 30,000 Krishi Sakhis/Community Resource Persons will be appointed to train and guide farmers. 18.75 lakh farmers will prepare organic fertilizers like Jeevamrit and Beejamrit using their livestock resources.

Benefits of Natural Farming:

  1. Improves soil fertility and quality, ensuring long-term productivity.
  2. Reduces agricultural costs by minimizing dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
  3. Enhances climate resilience, protecting crops from floods, droughts, and waterlogging.
  4. Reduces health risks associated with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, ensuring safe and nutritious food for both farmers and consumers.
  5. Supports environmental conservation, ensuring healthy soil and a cleaner ecosystem for future generations.

Market Integration for Natural Farming Products: Farmers will be provided with a simplified certification system and a dedicated branding mechanism to help them sell their natural farming products in the market. The scheme's progress will be tracked through geo-tagging and real-time monitoring via an online portal.
