The Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare (DA&FW), Government of India, organized a National Workshop on the SATHI (Seed Authentication, Traceability, and Holistic Inventory) Portal at the NASC Complex in New Delhi. The event, led by the Seed Division of DA&FW, brought together over 140 participants, including government officials, state agriculture department representatives, researchers, and key stakeholders. The primary goal of the workshop was to review the progress of the SATHI Portal and plan for its future phases, with a focus on strengthening seed traceability, certification, and inventory management.
Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary of DA&FW, emphasized the crucial role of seed traceability in ensuring that high-quality seeds reach farmers. He noted the importance of coordinated efforts to make certified seeds more accessible and highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting new and improved seed varieties for the benefit of farmers. Additional Secretary Smt. Shubha Thakur reinforced the importance of collaboration with state departments, referring to them as "true partners" in the SATHI initiative. She outlined the portal's Phase-II, which will focus on seed inventory management to ensure that farmers have access to transparent seed-related information.
During the workshop, senior officials from NIC, ICAR, and the Seed Division conducted technical sessions to address challenges in seed certification and management. Presentations covered topics such as DNA fingerprinting, seed law enforcement, and seed laboratory processes. These discussions provided insights into how the SATHI Portal enhances decision-making for stakeholders at all levels by improving transparency and efficiency in seed management.
State representatives shared their experiences with the implementation of the SATHI Portal, noting improvements in the accuracy and speed of seed certification processes. They also highlighted the need for technical support and capacity-building to ensure the broader adoption of the portal. An interactive session followed, where state officials expressed their readiness to implement the next phase of the SATHI Portal, emphasizing the need for continued support to integrate the system at the state level.
Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the SATHI Portal aims to improve transparency and efficiency in seed management. The workshop reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing seed quality and ensuring a more reliable supply chain for farmers. The event concluded with a clear message: the SATHI Portal will play a vital role in transforming India’s seed sector for the benefit of farmers across the country.
