The Health Department Commissioner has issued comprehensive guidelines to protect against the adverse effects of cold waves. Considering the significant health impact during December and January due to chilly winds, detailed precautions and preparedness measures have been outlined. Essential steps as per the National Guidelines for Prevention and Management of Cold Wave and Frost, issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), are being implemented. Departments and hospitals have been instructed to remain alert and take timely and effective action.
Special Arrangements in Hospitals:
The Chief Medical and Health Officers, along with Block Medical Officers, have been directed to regularly review hospital arrangements at district and block levels. Special emphasis has been placed on the quick identification and appropriate treatment of health issues like hypothermia and cold-related ailments to ensure prompt care in hospitals.
Precautionary Measures and Safety Tips:
- Stay Updated on Weather Alerts: Citizens are advised to stay informed about weather forecasts through local communication channels and follow all necessary updates.
- Avoid Unnecessary Outdoor Exposure: Refrain from traveling or staying outdoors for prolonged periods during cold waves.
- Dress in Layers to Stay Warm: Wear multiple layers of woolen clothing and ensure that your head, neck, hands, and feet are well-covered.
- Eat a Balanced Diet: Consume fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin C. Drinking warm liquids can help boost immunity and maintain body warmth.
- Care for the Elderly and Children: Pay special attention to the health of elderly individuals and young children in your neighborhood.
- Seek Medical Advice: If you experience symptoms such as a runny nose, flu-like conditions, pale skin, or excessive chills, consult a doctor immediately.
- Avoid Indoor Use of Coal or Fire Pots: Using coal or fire pots in closed rooms increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be life-threatening.
Symptoms of Hypothermia and Frostbite:
- Frostbite: Signs include pale or white skin, numbness, and muscle stiffness.
- Hypothermia: Symptoms include difficulty speaking, shortness of breath, drowsiness, excessive sleep, and unconsciousness.
What to Do:
- Immediately move the affected person to a warm place and cover them with blankets, towels, or sheets.
- Provide warm clothing and hot beverages (do not give liquids to unconscious individuals).
- Seek immediate medical assistance.
What Not to Do:
- Do not consume alcohol, as it lowers body temperature and constricts blood vessels.
- Avoid rubbing frostbitten areas, as it can cause further damage.
- Do not give fluids to unconscious individuals.
