Enhancing climate resilience in Agriculture, government major step for rural farmers

The Indian Government, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), has taken significant steps to enhance agricultural resilience against climate change and strengthen farmers' capabilities. Through the National Innovations in Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project, ICAR is studying the impact of climate change on crops, livestock, horticulture, and fisheries, while developing weather-resistant technologies. These innovations help regions vulnerable to extreme weather conditions like droughts, floods, heatwaves, and frost.

Climate-Resilient Crop Varieties for Farmers:

Over the past decade, ICAR has developed 2,593 crop varieties, with 2,177 of them showing tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses. These varieties are specifically designed to help farmers maintain yields despite the unpredictable effects of climate change.

District-Level Solutions for Climate Challenges:

Following the protocols of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a vulnerability assessment has been carried out for 651 predominantly agricultural districts. Among 310 vulnerable districts, 109 have been categorized as "very high" and 201 as "high" vulnerability. To address these challenges, District Agricultural Contingency Plans (DACPs) have been implemented, recommending location-specific climate-resilient crops and management practices.

The Concept of "Climate Resilient Villages" (CRVs):

The concept of Climate Resilient Villages (CRVs) has been implemented in 448 villages located in 151 districts vulnerable to climate change. These villages serve as models for farmers, showcasing climate-resilient practices like water conservation, soil health management, and crop diversification.

Schemes to Promote Sustainable Agriculture:

The Government has also launched various schemes under the National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA) to combat climate-related agricultural challenges:

  1. Per Drop More Crop (PDMC): Promotes micro-irrigation technologies like drip and sprinkler systems for efficient water usage.
  2. Rainfed Area Development (RAD): Focuses on Integrated Farming Systems (IFS) to enhance productivity and reduce risks associated with climatic variability.
  3. Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme (PMFBY): Provides financial support to farmers affected by natural calamities and adverse weather conditions.

Weather-Based Agricultural Management: The Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) scheme, run by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), offers medium-range weather forecasts at the district and block levels. These forecasts, coupled with agrometeorological advisories, help farmers plan their activities better and reduce crop losses due to unusual weather patterns.

A Holistic Approach to Rural Development: These initiatives help farmers face the challenges of climate change while ensuring a stable livelihood. The government's vision is to make rural areas self-sufficient and prosperous, fostering sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing farmers' resilience to climate fluctuations.
