World Food Day 2024
World Food Day 2024

On October 16, 2024, World Food Day was celebrated with a focus on securing a brighter future for all by promoting better lifestyles and health. On this occasion, the Ministry of AYUSH reaffirmed its support for the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2, aimed at ending hunger and improving food security. Through the principles of Ayurveda, the ministry is committed to creating a healthier, disease-free world.

Minister of State for AYUSH, Shri Pratap Rao Jadhav, emphasized the importance of recognizing that Ayurveda's approach to food goes beyond mere nutrition. It strives to nourish the body, calm the mind, and satisfy the soul. He highlighted how Ayurveda guides us to live in harmony with nature and that it views food as an essential element in maintaining balance, not just a source of energy.

AYUSH Ministry’s Initiative on World Food Day

During the 2024 World Food Day celebrations, the Ministry of AYUSH reiterated its commitment to promoting a disease-free world through the principles of Ayurveda. This ancient system emphasizes natural nutrition, prevention, and wellness. By adopting Ayurveda's dietary guidelines, food can become a powerful tool for promoting health and longevity. Through collective efforts both in India and globally, the ministry continues to work towards improving nutritional outcomes and building a brighter, healthier future for everyone.

Ayurveda Diet: A Step towards a Healthier Life

A balanced diet not only affects individual health but also contributes to global food security and sustainable development. According to the principles of Ayurveda, “Food is the best medicine.” Consumers are advised to follow healthy eating practices to improve their well-being. Secretary of the Ministry of AYUSH, Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, stated that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) notified the Ayurveda Diet Regulations in 2021, which is revolutionizing this sector.

India’s Unique Contribution to Food Security and Sustainability

India's traditional diet, which is plant-based and includes grains, pulses, and vegetables, stands as a model for both nutrition and sustainability. Compared to animal-based diets, it uses fewer natural resources and emits fewer greenhouse gases. A report suggests that if the world adopted India's consumption patterns, only 0.84 Earths would be required to sustain global food production by 2050. Professor Anupam Srivastava from the National Institute of Ayurveda (NIA), Jaipur, stated that AYUSH’s innovative approach to Ayurveda Diet aligns perfectly with SDG-2, which focuses on hunger, food security, nutrition, and sustainability.

Empowering the Fight against Malnutrition

The Ministry of AYUSH launched the "AYUSH Dietary Guidelines for a Malnutrition-Free India," aiming to improve nutritional outcomes, particularly for children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. In collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, this initiative represents a significant step towards making India malnutrition-free by promoting AYUSH-based diets and lifestyles. The inclusion of Ayurvedic food in the daily meals of those suffering from malnutrition is helping improve their nutritional status.
