The government continues to introduce new schemes to enhance farmers' financial well-being and support agricultural activities. One of its latest initiatives, the PM Dhan Dhanya Yojana (PMDDY), aims to increase farmers' income in 100 selected districts. The Ministry of Agriculture is currently finalizing the details, and the scheme is expected to be launched before the sowing season for Kharif crops.
According to Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, several districts face lower productivity, which leads to financial struggles for farmers. Under PMDDY, the government will focus on these 100 aspirational districts, benefiting 1.6 crore farmers by improving crop production, irrigation, loan accessibility, and post-harvest management.
To strengthen irrigation facilities, the scheme will integrate borewells, solar pumps, micro-irrigation systems, and electricity connections. This will ensure that farmers no longer have to visit multiple offices to avail of different subsidies, thereby making the process smoother and more efficient.
The government is committed to making agriculture a profitable and value-driven sector. The Ashok Dalwai Committee has identified seven key factors for doubling farmers' income, which include:
75,000 Farmers Have Already Doubled Their Income: According to a National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report, the average monthly income per farmer household increased from ₹6,426 in 2012-13 to ₹10,218 in 2018-19. Additionally, a study by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) documented 75,000 success stories of farmers who have successfully more than doubled their income. Through the PM Dhan Dhanya Yojana, the government is taking a significant step towards strengthening farmers' financial stability and making agriculture a sustainable and profitable venture.
