Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to issue certificates to over 30,000 self-help groups (SHGs) acting as 'Krishi Sakhis' (agricultural friends) and will release ₹20,000 crore to more than 9.26 crore farmers during his visit to Varanasi. This initiative aims to create 3 crore 'Lakhpati Didis' (women millionaires). The program will see participation from 732 Krishi Vigyan Kendras, over one lakh primary agricultural cooperative societies, and nearly five lakh common service centers across the country. Krishi Sakhis can earn a good income annually through their skills and training. The central government hopes this initiative will provide employment opportunities for women and make them self-reliant.
During their training, Krishi Sakhis will have to pass a proficiency test. Those who pass will be certified as para-extension workers, enabling them to carry out various activities under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare's schemes. On average, a Krishi Sakhi can earn between ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 per year. So far, out of a total of 70,000 SHGs, 34,000 have received training across different states.
